Renting a cell phone A Japanese Cell Phone

You may be looking to rent a cell phone or purchasing a prepaid phone when you come to Japan or have visitors coming. It's quite easy and prices vary on the rental of your cell phone (k-tai in Japanese.)

Places to rent a cellular phone

There are many places to get a rental phone but the most convenient would be after getting off your plane at Narita Airport, Kansai International Airport, and other airports. There airports have counters set up by companies looking for your business.

Price of a renting a cellular phone

The price of renting a cellular phone is about 500 yen per day. The rates for calling vary between companies and destination. Some cell phone companies will allow you to call international. Some phone rental plans do not charge for incoming calls. Check out some of the companies listed below and find out which is best for you.

You will need a credit card to rent from any of these companies.

Places to purchase a prepaid cellular phone

The easiest place to purchase a prepaid cellular phone is a convenient store. Convenient stores like 7-11, Lawsons, and Family Mart, litter the streets of Japan. A prepaid cellular phone without English will cost about 5,000 yen.

You will need to buy prepaid calling cards of 3,000 or 5,000 yen denominations which will expire 60 days after activation.

The phone maybe reused if you recharge the phone (by purchasing more prepaid time) within 180 days of the first activation. You can continue recharging the phone for up to 360 days, and then it becomes useless except as a prop in your "using the telephone" classes. Still, it's nice to have around, especially if you expect more visitors later in the year.
