Where can I exchange money in Japan?

You can always change money at the airport, hotels, and banks. The rates do vary among each of these institutions.

The airport may be the most convenient because you can get off your plane and exchange practically any currency and at any times Unfortunately, the exchange rates at the airport are often not the best.

You should be able to exchange money at any large hotel in big cities or tourist areas. The rates offered at the hotel should be better than that of the airport but you may only exchange during certain hours of the day.

Banks are only open from 9 or 9:30 am to 4pm. Banks should offer the best rates but rates do vary between the banks institution. We recommend that you exchange money at the Post Office Bank, Yu-cho.

At the post office banks and some banks, you will be offered a better exchange rate if you are changing traveller's checks.
