Whereas Volume I of the Busy People series introduces the most basic patterns for constructing simple sentences in Japanese, Volume II aims to provide students with the foundational skills for forming more complex expressions that will enable them to further advance their command of the language. As you look through this workbook, therefore, you will probably notice that the Japanese presented in the back is considerably more difficult than what appears toward the front. Put another way, this means that by successfully completing the materials covered in Volume II and in the workbook, you will be able to proceed from survival level all the way to intermediate and even advanced fluency.
This book has been designed as a supplement: you use it after completing each lesson in the main text in order to confirm your mastery of the grammar presented therein and enhance your ability to understand and carry out communicative tasks related to the topics covered. Toward this end, it has been written to be slightly more advanced, and faster-paced, than the main text while also dealing with topics a little outside those already found in the Target Dialogues and Speaking Practice sections.Customer Reviews:
Textbook for very busy people
I need for this book to remind me my old university Japanese classes, not to learn one from scratch. I found very helpful to listen the CD for my 25-50 minutes commute to work. My goal was to help me to start think in Japanese again. The book and CD are helpful for that.
good for supplemental practice.
It's good to use after reading and working with the japanese for busy people II textbook. Its basically supplemental practice, this doesn't really teach much besides that.
Not enough kanji
Be warned that this workbook is mainly in hiragana with an almost complete lack of kanji. For some reason they don't use the kanji they teach in the level 2 study book in this workbook. It becomes extremely difficult to study intermediate Japanese entirely in hiragana, and the only all-hiragana writing used in Japan is for children.
To be fair, I did like the warm-up section that reviewed verb conjugations. Also, to give myself some credit, I lived in Japan for 3 years and passed JLPT level 3.

A great supplement to the Japanese for Busy People II -- good practice for self-motivated learners of Japanese. Each lesson (there's 20) is composed of three sections, Warming Up (preparation practice), Sentence Pattern and Practice (key learning objectives with plenty of practice in sentence patterns), and Challenge (a level above to give learners a chance to test their skills). There's fill-in charts and lots of cartoons. Note that Kanji with Furigana pronunciation guides have been provided only in some sections in Lessons 11-20. There's no additional vocabulary other than what's already provided with the main text --- a positive point, in my opinion. All lessons run parallel to the main text. I bought this workbook because I don't get much practice to speak Japanese. I've found that the sentence patterns from the workbook are less complicated than those from the text and repeating them has really helped to "cement" what I'd learned. There's audio tapes sold separately, but you need them only if you prefer extra listening practice.
Good Complement to the Workbook
To pronounce Japanese well, it is important to repeatedly hear a native speaker. These tapes re-enforce the workbook lessons.
JFBP is a great series that really benefits from the multiple components. e.g.

4 The tapes for the workbook
5 The video
Each component re-enforces the other.
While I really like this series, you will need to find a way to deal with two short comings.
1) They never tell you the rules for verb conjugation. They only tell you to memorize. You will need another resource for this.
2) There is a lot of vocabulary, but no drilling method provided. You will need to do some flashcard drilling to really remember these. Don't forget to review old lessons.
All and all a great series. However, Pimsleur is still my favorite. Pimsleur is only audio, so is quite limited compared to JFBP, but their educational method is superb.
