How to rent a car in Japan

Renting a car in Japan is very easy. A rental car is called "Renta Ka-" (レンタカー).

What do you need to rent a car?

In order to rent a car, you must have an International Drivers License or a Japanese License. You do not need a credit card to rent a car. You will pay for the car when you take the car, and when you return the car if there are any additional charges.

Where can I find rental car company?

There are rental car companies near practically all train stations and along big routes (highways.) Even Japan Rail (JR) operates their own car rental company as a convenience to train riders. Car rental companies are often run by the car's manufacturer. For example, you can rent only Nissan cars from a Nissan car rental company. Hertz Rental Car has a partnership with Toyota Rental Car.

Renting a car isn't expensive.

The price depends on where you are renting from, size of the car and the rental car company.

An average rental car price for the first 24 hours for a compact car is around 6,000 yen. In places like Okinawa where there is a lot of competition, rental car prices of a compact car can be 4,000 yen for the first 24 hours.

Additional Costs

The rental car has unlimited mileage. The only additional thing you would pay for is insurance which is around 1500 yen per day and fees for returning a rental car late.

Example

Here's an exa mple of a Toyota rental car brochure with prices and sizes of cars.
Sample rental prices in Japan

Here's an example of the price of renting a standard P3 class car for 50 hours (2 nights, 3 days) with a 10% discount for using a discount card.

First day (¥9,000) + Second day (¥7,500) + 2 hours (¥2,400) = ¥18,900
Minus 10% + Insurance (¥1,000/day) + Navigation System (¥500/day) + Tax (5%)

Total = ¥21,535 or ¥5,383/person if there are 4 people.
