Pets and Animals
Bringing pets to Japan
Japan is a rabies and leptospirosis free country.
There are strict guidelines to taking your pets with you to Japan.
If you are traveling from a rabies free country, your
pet may be quarantined for as little as 12 hours. However, if you
are traveling from a country which is not rabies free, your
pet will be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days to 180 days.
Be sure to check the Japanese
Animal Quarantine Service website for information regarding
bringing animals into Japan. The process is can be very long and
complicated.

Map of Rabies Free Countries
Since Japan is a rabies and leptospirosis free country,
you should not have much trouble bringing your pets to your home
country. However, be sure to check the guidelines of the Japanese
Animal Quarantine Service and your country's Animal Quarantine Service.
When traveling by air, make
sure you contact the airline with which you intend flying with
to find out the requirements for taking your pet animal along.
Which countries are rabies free?
If you enter Japan with a dog, cat, raccoon, fox
or skunk directly from any of the countries indicated as rabies
free, it will be able to complete the quarantine procedure within
12 hours as long as the certificates issued by the quarantine
authorities in that country meet the requirements of the MOAFF
Animal Quarantine Service.
The countries that are rabies free are Australia,
Cyprus, Fiji Islands, Guam, Great Britain (UK), Hawaii, Iceland,
Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, and Taiwan.
