Driving in Japan If
you're planning on driving in Japan, you'll need to bring an International
Driver's Permit. Here are steps to getting an International Driver's
Permit.
Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP)
An International Driver's License issued by AAA.
Obtaining an International Drivers Permit
is quite easy. An international driving permit is issued by your
home country's national automobile association. At the American
Auto Association (AAA) in the US, it costs $10.
You may only obtain an IDP in the country that your
Driver's License is valid.
IDP's must be obtained prior
to arriving in Japan. They cannot be obtained in Japan.
Note that IDP's are not intended to replace your home
countries license and should only be used as a supplement to a valid
license. You must also have a valid license in
addition to an IDP to drive in Japan.
With an IDP license, you can
drive a scooter or motorcycle if your home issued license permits
you to drive a scooter or motorcycle in your home country.
The license is only valid for 1 year. After your first
year, you will be required to obtain a Japanese license.
